Frequently Asked Questions

Common issues and answers about integrations

I can't connect to Jira from Alva

Check the following items:

  • Email address: Make sure the email matches the one used for your Atlassian account (the same one you use to log in to Jira).
  • API token: Verify that you copied the entire token without extra spaces. Tokens are long strings of characters.
  • Site URL: Your Jira URL must include https:// and end with .atlassian.net. Example: https://mycompany.atlassian.net
  • Token expiration: API tokens can expire. If your token is old, create a new one from the Atlassian token management page.
I can't find the App passwords option in Microsoft

The App passwords option only appears after you enable two-step verification (2FA). Go to your Microsoft account security settings and enable it first.

For organization accounts (Microsoft 365 business/enterprise), your IT administrator may have disabled app passwords at the organization level. In this case, contact your IT department and ask them to enable the "App passwords" feature in the Azure AD admin portal.

I lost my token or app password

No problem — just create a new one:

Then update the credentials in Alva's settings.

Is this secure?

Yes. API tokens and app passwords are the recommended authentication method by both Atlassian and Microsoft for third-party app access. Here is why they are secure:

  • You never share your real password with Alva.
  • Tokens and app passwords can be revoked at any time without affecting your main account.
  • They provide independent access — revoking a token only disconnects that specific app.
  • API tokens typically have limited scope compared to your full account credentials.
How do I revoke Alva's access?

To disconnect Alva from your services:

Once revoked, Alva will no longer be able to access those services until you create and configure new credentials.

The Microsoft/Atlassian interface has changed

Microsoft and Atlassian regularly update their interfaces. If the screenshots in this guide no longer match what you see:

  • Use the search function on the settings page to find "API tokens" or "App passwords".
  • Search Google for the latest instructions: "create Atlassian API token" or "create Microsoft app password".
  • Check the official documentation: Atlassian docs or Microsoft docs.

The general process remains the same even if button positions or labels change slightly.

I don't have a Google Cloud account, is it paid?

No, it is completely free. You do not need an existing Google Cloud account or billing setup. Google AI Studio lets you create a Gemini API key directly with your Google account (Gmail).

The free tier includes 15 requests per minute, which is more than enough for personal and professional daily use with Alva. No credit card is required at any step.

My Gemini API key doesn't work

Check the following:

  • Key format: Gemini API keys start with AIza. Make sure you copied the complete key.
  • Quota exceeded: If you get a quota error, you have exceeded the free tier limit (15 requests/minute). Wait a moment and try again.
  • Incomplete copy: API keys are long. Make sure you copied the entire key without truncation. Go back to AI Studio and copy it again.
  • Key deleted: If you deleted the key from AI Studio, you need to create a new one.
Can I use the same Gemini key for other apps?

Technically yes, a single Gemini API key can be used across multiple applications. However, it is recommended to create a separate key for each app. Here is why:

  • Quota management: Each key shares the same quota. If another app uses up your free requests, Alva won't work until the quota resets.
  • Security: If one app is compromised, you can revoke just that key without affecting others.
  • Tracking: Separate keys let you monitor usage per application in Google AI Studio.

Creating additional keys is free and takes just a few seconds in AI Studio.
